Guiding Conscious, Earth-Honoring End-of-Life Choices
A Sacred Passage supports individuals, families, and communities in reimagining death as a meaningful rite of passage and creating more personal, participatory, and earth-honoring approaches to after-death care. Through education, advance planning, conservation burial and other sustainable choices, we seek to restore a culture of death care that honors both those we love and the living earth.
Why This Work Matters
Across Montana and throughout the country, more people are seeking meaningful, affordable, and environmentally responsible approaches to death care. Growing interest in alternative end-of-life practices reflects a desire for:
Earth-honoring alternatives to conventional burial and cremation
Greater family and community participation in caring for our deceased loved ones
More transparent and affordable options
Meaningful rituals that reflect diverse beliefs, traditions, and values
Support for navigating death outside traditional systems
Our Response
Sacred Passage Death Care was created to help meet these emerging needs.
At the heart of this work is reimagining the dying process as a meaningful rite of passage, and death as a sacred, natural transition of the soul.
Through education, planning, guidance, and earth-honoring disposition choices, we help individuals and families navigate this transition with greater confidence, participation, and connection.
By restoring family and community involvement in death care, we seek to foster experiences that are more personal, sustainable, culturally meaningful, and aligned with the natural cycles of life and death.
Our work is taking shape through three interconnected areas:
Education, Planning, and Guidance
Aligned with a growing movement to reclaim death care from corporate systems, Sacred Passage Death Care provides education, guidance, and community-based support that help individuals and families navigate end-of-life decisions with confidence, meaning, and care.
We believe that families deserve access to information, practical support, and meaningful choices that reflect their values and traditions. Through education and personalized guidance, we help restore family and community participation in honoring the dead and creating meaningful ceremonies of remembrance.

Cultivating the Field
Meaningful change happens through strong organizations, trusted relationships, and communities working together. A Sacred Passage seeks to strengthen Western Montana's emerging end-of-life ecosystem by fostering collaboration, supporting organizational capacity, sharing knowledge and resources, and connecting people working toward more compassionate, community-centered, and environmentally responsible approaches to death care.
2. Conservation Cemeteries in Western Montana
In partnership with a conservation land trust, A Sacred Passage is working toward the development of a conservation cemetery in the Missoula area as a first step toward expanding access to conservation burial in Western Montana. Located within protected natural landscapes, conservation cemeteries provide environmentally sustainable burials, allowing only natural, chemical-free burial using biodegradable materials, permanently conserving and restoring the land for future generations.
Unlike conventional cemeteries with manicured lawns, irrigation systems, and extensive infrastructure, a conservation cemetery protects natural habitats, supports biodiversity, and honors the ecological cycles of life and death.
Conservation cemeteries:
Provide natural, earth-honoring burial options
Permanently protect and steward open space and wildlife habitat
Offer gathering spaces for memorials, ceremonies, and cultural traditions
Support compatible public uses such as walking trails, nature appreciation, and educational programs
Develop deep relationships between people and the natural world
Create peaceful settings for reflection, remembrance, and community connection
3. Expanding Earth-Honoring Choices
Sacred Passage Death Care is committed to expanding access to environmentally responsible end-of-life options in Montana.
As part of this work, we advocate for policies that support sustainable approaches to body disposition, including the legalization of aquamation (also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water cremation)—a low-impact alternative to conventional flame cremation. We will also work with local and state leaders to ensure that conservation burial, green burial, and other earth-honoring practices are supported by public policy and community infrastructure.
Our advocacy efforts include:
Public education and community engagement
Collaboration with legislators, regulators, and cemetery officials
Partnership with organizations and advocates across the country
Coalition building and legislative strategy to advance sustainable death care options
Once aquamation becomes legal in Montana, Sacred Passage Death Care will explore opportunities to provide local access to these services through strategic partnerships or direct service offerings.
We believe it is our right and our responsibility, as stewards of the earth, to make available sustain-able choices that reduce environmental impact and honor the natural cycles of life and death.
